My dear, good little wife!
This afternoon at 2 pm, a film was shown in the hospital. I was looking for a change of pace and decided to go, mostly because of the newsreel. After an hour, the air in the packed room was so bad that it was difficult to watch the movie and on top of that, it was unbelievably hot. At 3:45 pm I left the hall with a comrade and laid down in bed for an hour. I had just fallen asleep when I was awoken all of a sudden. In a not particularly friendly manner (you know how it is when one gets woken up), I asked the comrade who had awoken me what the reason for the disturbance was. You should have seen how my tone of voice changed when he told me I was to come to the station’s sergeant because two packages were waiting for me there. You should have seen how I sprang out of bed, threw on a pair of pants and some gloves, and just about lost my own shadow in my haste. In the presence of the sergeant, the packages were opened and after he had made certain that there were no cigarettes inside, they were given over to me. My happiness was indescribable. Baked goods from home and especially from you taste truly wonderful. I thank you so, so much for that. The letters that were inside the packages had the numbers 5 and 7 on them. Did you send others? I was very, very excited to receive them.
Now that I know that we are having another child, I think about you even more. How are you doing? I hope that my absence won’t cause you too much misery. I think about these questions all the time. If it’s easier on you, then tell our secret to Uncle Franz. It’s nice to have a secret though! We men are always so pleased to see a new child come into the family. But you women, who carry all of that happiness under [?], you get to “experience” what that growing child feels like. Children are truly gifts from God. Think about that and be thankful that our three girls are healthy and complete. My dear little wife, we are here for each other and are a real family whose spirit is exactly as it should be and as we want it to be, and we really love each other and the children. We pray to God that he gives you a good pregnancy and gives all of us a healthy child. Whether it’s a girl or a boy isn’t the most important thing, after all. When Agathe knows, she will help you in whatever way she can--of that I am sure. Now for this reason I have to come back to the question of money--buy whatever you need and take care to buy the right food for your health. Nicht etwa, daß Du meinst ich wurde schimpfen, wenn Du nicht einen kaufen verspart hast. I know you and know that you won’t buy anything unreasonable. And if you had to use up the entire checkbook, I would know that you did it for you and the little ones, and I’d be satisfied. I can always get more money, so don’t let anyone’s health be damaged by trying to be too frugal.
Please give the children an extra kiss for me. I am doing much better. Many greetings and kisses from your Josef, who loves you.
