My dear little wife!
Yesterday I received four more little packages, which means in total I have received 6, for which I give you my deepest thanks. The baked goods taste excellent, just as I am used to from you. The mirror and comb also arrived. Unfortunately it has a few cracks in it, but it still works. I’m sure the soap dish is on its way. I’m doing much better. I’ve been getting meat with my meals as a dietary test. They want to see how I handle the food. There was also a change in doctors. The station doctor, a young man of 27 years, died last week very suddenly. The entrance of the new supervising doctor, who was a substitute for doctors on leave, was utterly ridiculous. As soon as he came into the hall, he said, in a thick Austrian accent: “Whoever has stomach problems will open his mouth when I approach his bed.” He wants to look at their teeth. He asked someone, “Do you know what a dentist looks like?” Awkward silence. Answer: “See, I knew it!” To another: “What does a dentist use to pull teeth out?” Answer: “A drill.” To a third: ,,Da müssen 2 Mann mit zum ,,Zahnarzt” anrichten. “My goodness, you have an actual graveyard in your mouth! A graveyard that’s been bombed!” Doctor: “Where are your teeth?” “In my pocket, Doctor, sir,” and so it went like that for two hours. He really took pleasure in it. He didn’t send me to the dentist, just said, “Yours are in order, you’re in luck! Do you smoke?” Answer: “At the moment I don’t, Doctor, sir” ,,Das würde gerade noch fehlen, wenn Sie auch im Bett rauchen würden.” Additional questions: “What did you used to smoke?” Answer: “4-5 cigarettes daily.” “Times how many?” “I’m not lying, Doctor, sir.” In the afternoon we received another visit from an important official--the city priest. He came to my bed and invited me to a service. Unfortunately I couldn’t [?] afford such a visit, was my decisive answer. I then explained why this was no longer the case, and he went away.
I wrote a short letter to our little Irmgard and composed a short poem for her. She’ll be awfully proud to have received a letter from her Papa to her alone.
I still haven’t received the letter from you that contained letters from Alfred and Eugen--maybe it’s still on its way.
I also received greetings from the Ortsgruppendienstbereichsappell. I’ll answer them in a special letter to Franz. I’m happy that you were there.
For today I’d like to close.
Many heartfelt greetings and kisses sends to you
Your Josef, who loves you.
