My dear little wife and darling children!
Today we arrived at the designated area after many days of transport. I am of course not allowed to give my exact location. The trip was taxing but I am in good health. The glorious sun is shining and there is no snow to be found; this place itself is a climatic spa. Now for a few of my impressions from the trip. This entire nation cannot even compete with the Germans. The whole domestic culture found here in the provinces can hardly be described. This country and its people are about to be put in their rightful place, a place they earned long ago. They can really only attribute it to happy coincidence that they’ve enjoyed such high standing for this long.
For the first time, I went to the Atlantic Ocean and could observe its ebb and flow and see the striking, proud ships firsthand. As a German, my heart went out to them and a silent, grateful thought was given to our leader. In just a few short weeks, every inch of this place will begin to bloom. There is absolutely no snowfall here and as I am writing this letter, the sun is beaming down from the heavens and the langurous warmth fills my entire being. Hopefully it stays this way for the duration of my training, which should last for about two months. I myself don’t know what’s to come after that, but I know that no matter what, I will return to you safe and sound. And you, my loves, you must do without me, but you can at least go about your lives as you wish. Personally, I don’t want to complain about any of these circumstances, because our current situation is borne out of urgent need, and must be endured as such. I have already given up every comfort, and I have to laugh, because it’s been easier for me than I myself would have thought. Now you know that I am healthy. From so far away, you can do me this one service: you can write as often to me as possible. The coming training will be hard for me to do, but I hope to get through it with a smile on my face. If my stomach begins to seriously trouble me, you can rest assured that I will be well taken care of by the troop doctor.
I send special greetings to you, my darling, good little wife. Knowing that the whole family is under your wing gives me the reassurance that one needs so dearly here.
I see the mother in the children, your picture in front of me and my thoughts are constantly on your loving and caring ways. I will use every available opportunity to write to you in order to make you and the children happy. My thoughts are on them constantly as well and I keep them in my mind’s eye as an ever-living memory.
For today, I send you all my love and many heartfelt kisses
From your Josef, who loves you.
